Honouring Indigenous Women Campaign
This campaign aimed to centre Indigenous women’s voices, raise awareness about violence against them, and challenge negative stereotypes. Two publications were produced which contained art and writings by Indigenous women: Hearts of Nations – Vol. 1 (2011) & Vol. 2 (2012).

Helen Betty Osborne
This poem by Marilyn Dumont, from her book “A Really Good Brown Girl” (1996), captures outsiders’ mistreatment of Indigenous women. The poem is about Helen Betty Osborne, a 19 year old Cree woman from Manitoba who was sexually assaulted and murdered in 1971.

This is a poem by Deloria Many Grey Horses on the subject of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. She submitted this poem to Art Saves Lives International Magazine to honour murdered and missing Indigenous women and their families, and as her clarion call to the Indigenous community and the global community of the beauty, strength and resiliency of Indigenous women.

On April 30, 2024, the Vancouver Island Regional Library hosted a virtual author talk with Angela Sterritt in honour of Red Dress Day, where she discussed her bestseller “Unbroken” and the MMIWG crisis, featuring a Q&A session and a public broadcast at the Cowichan Branch to raise awareness and encourage community engagement.

Bad Medicine by Christopher Twin
In “Bad Medicine,” Christopher Twin’s young adult graphic novel combines Cree folklore with horror, fantasy, and contemporary Indigenous issues, exploring themes like MMIWG, addiction, trauma, and ecological decline through ghost stories told by Cree teens, enhanced by evocative illustrations, and concluding with a hopeful message of youth resilience.
