About
Unearthing Justices: Indigenous Grassroots Resources and Supports for MMIWG2S+ is a collaborative, community-engaged initiative that centres the leadership, knowledge, and strength of Indigenous families and communities in the response to the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ people (MMIWG2S+).
Rooted in years of relationship-building and research, Unearthing Justices makes visible the powerful and transformative work already being carried out by Indigenous communities across Turtle Island—from healing circles and memorial walks to grassroots patrols and education campaigns. While mainstream justice systems often fail Indigenous peoples, this project affirms what communities already know: that justice lives in community action, care, and self-determination.
Through an interactive digital map and live archive of 500+ grassroots initiatives, Unearthing Justices supports the sharing of resources, the strengthening of networks, and the amplification of Indigenous-led solutions. This work responds to the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into MMIWG and reflects a growing movement for justice that is local, relational, and sovereign.
Developed in partnership with Indigenous organizations, families, and knowledge keepers, Unearthing Justices is not just a digital resource—it is a commitment to doing justice differently, by listening, honouring, and mobilizing the knowledge already held in Indigenous communities.
